Charles Victor Emmanuel Leclerc was born on March 17, 1772 at Pontoise, near Paris.

He became a General during the French Revolution, then married Pauline Bonaparte, one of Napoleon's sisters.

He died of yellow fever at Santo-Domingo on November 1 or 2, 1802.
