Marie Francis Xavier Bichat was born on November 14, 1771 at Thoirette-en-Bresse, French Jura. His father was himself a physician and a surgeon.

He was named Physician of Paris' Hôtel-Dieu in 1800.

He died on July 22, 1802, and was buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris (8th division)  Tomb of Xavier Bichat.
